Acting on the nomination of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the UN General Assembly unanimously elected Achim Steiner as the Executive Director of UNEP on 16 March 2006 for a four-year term, effective 15 June 2006. He becomes the fifth Executive Director in UNEP's history. Effective 1 March 2009, Achim was also appointed Director-General of the UN Offices at Nairobi (UNON).

Before joining UNEP, Achim served as Director General of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) from 2001 to 2006. IUCN is widely regarded as one of the most influential and highly respected organizations in the field of conservation, environment and natural resources management. He held responsibility for the management and oversight of 1,000 staff located in 42 countries.

His professional track record in the fields of sustainable development policy and environmental management, his first-hand knowledge of civil society, governmental and international organizations, as well as his global experience spanning five continents, make him an excellent choice to lead the United Nations Environment Programme.

His professional career has included assignments with governmental, non-governmental and international organizations in different parts of the world. In Washington, where he was Senior Policy Advisor of IUCN's Global Policy Unit, he led the development of new partnerships between the environment community, the World Bank and the United Nations system. In Southeast Asia he worked as Chief Technical Advisor on a programme for the sustainable management of Mekong River watersheds and community-based natural resources management. In 1998 he was appointed Secretary-General of the World Commission on Dams, based in South Africa, where he managed a global programme of work to bring together the public sector, civil society and the private sector in a global policy process on dams and development.

He worked both at grassroots level as well as at the highest levels of international policy-making to address the interface between environmental sustainability, social equity and economic development.

Achim, a German national, was born in Brazil in 1961, where he lived for ten years. His educational background includes a BA from the University of Oxford as well as an MA from the University of London with specialization in development economics, regional planning, and international development and environment policy. He also studied at the German Development Institute in Berlin as well as the Harvard Business School. He serves on a number of international advisory boards, including the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED).

Earle is the co-lead for the Global Enterprise Theatre which serves the business needs of Cisco's largest Global Enterprise accounts by delivering a model for next-generation client relationships via new business models, solutions and strategic partnerships. Earle also leads the Cisco Services business across the 20 countries that comprise the European Markets. Cisco Services is a growing part of Cisco's overall business, with revenues in excess of US$7 billion annually.

With nearly 30 years IT industry experience, Earle has held a number of senior management positions. Prior to joining Cisco, he served as CEO at StreamServe Inc., one of Europe's largest privately held software companies and President of EMEA Operations at Ariba, a leading e-procurement company. Previously, Earle spent 18 years at Hewlett Packard, where he held several high profile roles in Europe and the US—eventually rising to Chief Marketing Officer for HP's US$35 billion enterprise computing business. He also served as President of HP's Internet business, one of only two pan-HP business units.

Earle is a recognised expert in emerging business models and the role collaboration and e-business plays in delivering value and profit. He has co-authored two business books—Mesh Collaboration: Creating New Business Value in the Network of Everything released in 2008 and From Dot.com to Dot.profit published in 2000.

Earle has an honorary doctorate in computing science. He is married with two daughters and lives in Surrey, England.

Based in San Jose, California, Guido Jouret is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Cisco’s Emerging Technologies Group (ETG), which is responsible for incubating Cisco’s future billion-dollar businesses. In this role, he evaluates new product and market opportunities, ensures architectural tie-in between the emerging technologies and Cisco’s core products, and is responsible for developing and communicating Cisco’s thought leadership on new technologies. He is also the general manager for early-stage business units, leading them through initial product development. He also developed the company’s Video and Smart Grid strategies. He is a dynamic and engaging speaker, rated among the company’s top 5 presenters and is frequently asked to present the company’s strategy and vision to top customers and conferences.

Prior to his role as CTO, Guido was the global head of the Innovation Team of Cisco’s Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG). His team was responsible for developing new methods, architectures, and business cases to help Cisco’s key customers successfully adopt Internet-based technologies. Prior to this role, Guido held a similar position for the Asia Pacific region, where he worked with Asia’s leading corporations and governments, advising them on how they could best develop IT strategies to leverage the latest technologies. Prior to his position in IBSG, Guido was responsible for information systems for Cisco’s sites in EMEA (Europe Middle-East and Africa), heading up a team of 600 IT specialists, with budget responsibility of 100M$. His team was responsible for delivering all IT infrastructure and applications for Cisco in EMEA. Specific areas of responsibility included: Networking & Telecoms, Datacenter, Security, Help Desk, Desktop, Operations, and applications areas (Sales, Marketing, Finance, HR). Guido was in charge of defining Cisco EMEA’s IT strategy, communication, implementation and coordination of the activities of a distributed multinational team. Global application implementations included Oracle Financials, PeopleSoft, and Siebel. He also out-tasked application development, desktop services, and various other IT functions using a core vs. context analysis methodology.

Prior to joining Cisco, Guido was responsible for IT in the R&D division of Beaufour-Ipsen Pharmaceutical Group. Before that, Guido worked as software co-ordinator at the London Parallel Applications Centre, where he developed software strategy. He commenced his career as a research associate at the Imperial College for Science, Technology and Medicine, London. Guido has a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (MA, USA), a DIC (Diploma of Imperial College), and PhD in Computing from Imperial College (UK).

Georg Kell is the Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact, the world’s largest voluntary corporate responsibility initiative with more than 6,000 participants in over 130 countries. Spanning more than two decades, his career with the United Nations began in 1987 at the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Geneva. In 1997, Mr. Kell joined the Office of the UN Secretary-General in New York, where he spearheaded the development of new strategies to enhance private sector engagement with the work of the United Nations. As one of the Global Compact’s key architects, he has led the initiative since its launch in 2000, building the most widely recognized global business platform on human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption. Prior to joining the UN System, Mr. Kell worked as a researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany and as a financial analyst evaluating multinational companies’ investment portfolios in Asia and Africa. A native of Germany, he holds advanced degrees in economics and engineering from the Technical University of Berlin.

As Vice President of Marketing, Brand and External Communications Axel Haentjens is responsible for Orange Business Services worldwide multinational market as well as the French B2B market (from multinational to SMEs). Mr. Haentjens’ responsibilities include managing the marketing plan process and the brand. It encompasses the management of all external communications channels, including media relations, advertizing, online communications, collaterals and customer communications. Prior to this position, Axel Haentjens served as head of Marketing for Orange Business Services as well as head of Strategy and Business Development for Equant (now Orange Business Services). Before the merger between Equant and Global One, Axel Haentjens served as head of Marketing for Global One, a post he held from July 2000 until June 2001. Prior to that, Axel Haentjens served as vice president of France Telecom Data Networks and Services, from February 1999 until July 2000. In 1996, Axel Haentjens created the Strategy and Product Development departments within France Telecom Transpac. Axel Haentjens joined France Telecom Transpac in 1995 as a country delegate in charge of supervision and control of European affiliates. Before joining France Telecom, Axel Haentjens held positions as vice president for Strategy, Marketing and International at SG2, a software affiliate of the French bank; CEO of an affiliated start-up; and marketing manager and business unit director at SEGIN, a software company. Marc Fossier is the Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer for the France Telecom-Orange Group. He was appointed to this newly created executive position on March 2nd, 2009. Previously, Mr Fossier has worked over 20 years for France Telecom and has held various positions. He joined France Telecom in 1988 as Head of the Industry Division at the Directorate of Industrial Procurement and International Affairs of France Telecom and later became Chief of Staff of the Chairman and of the CEO of France Telecom, then Vice President, Head of the Payphone and Calling Cards Division. In September 2000, he was appointed at the Executive Committee as Group Executive Vice President Consumer Wireline Services and Group Vice President Public Affairs. Since 2005, he had been the Chief Technology Officer for the Group (Group CTO), in charge of technological strategy, standardization and innovation processes. After starting his carreer in Industrial Engineering in the USA and in Microelectronics R&D, Marc Fossier served for the French Administration in charge of Industrial Development, and he became Special Advisor to the French Minister for Education, Research and Technology, from 1986 to 1988. Mr Fossier is a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole des Mines. Mr Fossier is "Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite".

Prior to founding CDP, Paul Dickinson founded and built a corporate communications company, Rufus Leonard, into a multi-million turnover company, working with clients such as Shell and the Prudential.

Peter works with Alcatel-Lucent clients to balance capital and operational expenditure pressures with "green" initiatives, network outage concerns, disaster readiness planning and network power requirements. In the process, he draws upon Alcatel-Lucent's leadership in Network Deployment & Integration Services, the Chief Technology Office (CTO) experts, network power services, and multivendor portfolio to develop unique network power solutions. Under Peter’s direction, the Alcatel-Lucent Sustainable Power Solution has successfully integrated power into wireline, wireless, government and enterprise installations globally. More than a third of Peter’s twenty-five year telecommunications career has been focused on the global deployment and integration services business. During that time, Peter held positions in marketing, product engineering management and product management for Alcatel-Lucent and served clients and vendors in the telecommunications and power industries. Peter’s vast experience in maintenance, deployment and sustainable energy services makes him a popular speaker at trade shows, conferences and other industry events. A white paper Peter co-authored with colleagues in the Bell Labs Reliability and Security office, titled "Intrinsic Vulnerabilities of the Power Systems Supporting Communication Networks and Expert Strategies for Defense," was presented and discussed at the 2006 CTIA Tower Technology Summit. Peter presented at the International Telecommunications Energy Conference (Intelec) 2006 and 2008, and at the Broad Band World Form in 2009. Mr. Graff is a Director with Verizon Communications - Core Network & Technology, which is based in Basking Ridge, NJ. He is responsible for managing Verizon's NEBS and Fiber Optic Component (FOC) Compliance Organization, and Quality Assurance, Contracting, and Budgeting for Systems Integration & Testing. Chuck oversees Verizon's national network for compliance to NEBS and FOC for all products located in its 41-state territory. He has served in a variety of departments within Verizon throughout his 36 years of service, including: Science & Technology, Systems Integration & Testing, Security Systems, Technology Organization, Product Engineering, Quality Assurance, International, Marketing, and Business Services.

As director of the NEBS/FOC and Quality Assurance (NQA) group, Chuck's primary goal is to ensure that all network products Verizon purchases meet or exceed Verizon's quality, safety, reliability, environmental and energy efficiency requirements for its Wireless and Telecom and Business divisions. Chuck recently published the industry's first ever groundbreaking document on Energy Efficiency Requirements for Telecommunications Equipment calling for a 20% reduction in power requirements for all equipment purchased by Verizon, and the Thermal Management Simulation and Test program which documents a roadmap to achieve the 20% reduction. In 2009, Chuck was presented an Industry Leadership and Excellence Award for his dedication and achievement in this field. As an ISO 9000 and TL 9000 RAB registered Quality Systems Lead Auditor (QSLA), he is responsible for overseeing Verizon's multiple SIT laboratories ISO 9000 quality system and registration. SIT has been ISO 9000 registered for more than 14 years and he has performed multiple internal and external ISO audits on behalf of the company. As co-founder of the NEBS Seminars in the U.S. and Europe, Chuck has been chairman and presenter for the past fifteen years. He is also a founding member of the Telecommunications Carrier Group (TCG), formed to provide timely information on network requirements by major U.S. carriers.

Chuck is responsible for the creation and management of Verizon's Independent Testing Laboratory (ITL) certification program (TCP, TCWP & FOC). In 2007 Chuck created the new Verizon Technical Purchasing Requirements (TPR) program. He is also a member of the global Energy Efficiency - Inter Operators Collaborator Group (EE IOCG)/GeSI team. Prior to this role, Chris was Head of Brand and External Communications at Equant, where he managed the company rebranding to Orange Business Services. Before that he was Head of European Marketing at Equant. Chris also held marketing roles at companies including Siemens Communications and GPT in the UK in a career spanning 20 years in IT and Communications. Chris resides in Berkshire, UK. He has an MBA from Warwick Business School and a Bachelors degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Hull.
